Self-exploration Questions:

  • What subjects did you enjoy in high school? Why?

  • Did you participate in any extracurricular activities?

  • Do you consider your strengths are in math/science, English, business, etc...?

  • What do you see as your limitations?

  • Why are you in college?

  • What do you do in your spare time?

  • What does a college degree or certificate mean to you?

  • What type of lifestyle do you envision?

  • If you could have the ideal job right now without attending college what would it be?

Academic Information Questions:

  • What academic area are you considering?

  • What are the similarities/differences in the academic areas you are considering?

  • What do you know about these occupations?

  • What type of employment do you see these majors leading to?

  • How do your abilities and skills fit into these choices?

STEP TWO: Organize a Plan (information-gathering)

  • Make an appointment to take a career assessment.

  • Explore the general overview of the majors at ANC including the requirements.

  • Create a list of questions to ask faculty, students, or the Advising Center.

  • Take introduction classes within your college major.

  • Review general education class work and see where your strength lies.

  • Review the Sunday classifieds/job search websites and circle jobs of interest.

  • Conduct informational interviews with employers in an occupation of interest.

  • Explore career research engines on the Internet, such as O*NET.

STEP THREE: Career Action Plan

  • Develop a flexible academic plan.

  • Cultivate a sense of student connectedness through a variety of means, such as leadership opportunities, internships, community service, academic and student organizations.

  • Create a connection between curriculum and career options.

  • Discuss obstacles for program completion and career placement with an advisor. (GPA or assessment measures)

  • Prepare to meet all graduation requirements and deadlines.
